Functional movement

Functional movement is one-to-one, gentle coaching that teaches you how to move, breathe, and hold yourself better in everyday life – not just in the gym.

Sessions are calm, low-impact, and tailored to your level – ideal if you want to move with more awareness and ease, not just “train harder.”

What is functional movement?

Functional movement is a gentle, intentional style of exercise that focuses on how you move, not how fast or how heavy.

Instead of fast-paced workouts, we use small, precise movements to improve:

  • posture and joint alignment

  • breathing and ribcage mechanics

  • mobility, flexibility, and muscle balance

  • core stability and coordination

It’s grounded in principles from physiotherapy and movement science, but delivered as guided, one-to-one practice rather than medical treatment.

The goal is to help you:

  • move better

  • breathe better

  • feel more connected to your body

…so that everyday life – sitting, standing, walking, lifting, sport – feels easier and safer.

Functional movement at Roots

At Roots, Functional Movement is:

  • one-to-one coaching with a trained practitioner

  • done in a calm, supportive environment

  • slower-paced and low-impact

  • deeply focused on the details of movement and posture

We pay attention to:

  • how your spine stacks under your head and ribcage

  • how your pelvis, hips, and feet support you

  • how you transition between positions (lying, sitting, standing)

  • how your breathing and nervous system respond as you move

It’s especially helpful if you’re:

  • coming out of pain or injury

  • feeling stiff, tense, or “locked up”

  • sitting for long periods and feeling the effects

  • wanting a gentler approach to building strength and confidence

your sessions

Functional Movement sessions are slower-paced, low-impact, and very guided.

You can expect:

  • Breath awareness and diaphragmatic breathing
Learning to use your diaphragm and ribcage so your body feels calmer and more supported.

  • Spinal alignment and postural correction
Exploring simple cues that help your head, spine, and pelvis stack more efficiently – sitting, standing, walking.

  • Joint mobility and muscle balance
Gentle, precise movements to free stiff areas and wake up underactive muscles.

  • Safe transitions between movements
Practising how to move from lying to sitting, sitting to standing, bending, reaching, and lifting without strain.

  • Mind–body awareness and nervous system regulation
Slowing down, paying attention, and building trust in your body again.

At the end, you’ll leave with:

  • a short list of simple movements or postural reminders

  • clear guidance on how often to do them

  • tools you can use at home, at your desk, or during daily tasks

You don’t need to be flexible, strong, or sporty. Sessions are tailored to your current condition and long-term goals.

Who is functional movement for?

Functional Movement is a good fit if you:

  • are recovering from pain or injury and want to move safely again

  • feel stiff, imbalanced, or chronically tense

  • sit at a desk for long hours and struggle with posture and energy

  • are returning to movement after burnout, stress, or illness

  • want a gentler way to build strength, flexibility, and confidence

  • want to age well and stay active and independent

You can use it on its own, or as a bridge between:

  • Physiotherapy / Chiropractic → when pain is calming down

  • Sport / Gym training → when you’re ready to build capacity again

How functional movement fits with physiotherapy, chiropractic & yoga

A simple way to view it:

  • Physiotherapy
More clinical, focused on rehabilitation of specific injuries or pain.

  • Chiropractic
Focused on spinal and joint mechanics, nerve irritation, and adjustments.

  • Yoga
Often more about stretching, breath, and sometimes spiritual practice in a group setting.

  • Functional Movement (at Roots)
Sits between rehab and training – grounded in physical therapy principles, but focused on conscious, controlled movement patterns for long-term health and resilience.

We often combine them:

  • start with chiropractic/physio to settle pain,

  • then use Functional Movement to rebuild posture, strength, and confidence,

  • and support you if/when you return to sport or heavier training.
