Is chiropractic safe ?

Some people are afraid to visit a chiropractor because they think that working with their bodies can be dangerous. Literature and research on chiropractic work explain why working with chiropractors is safe and effective for clients. Despite the proven safety and effectiveness of chiropractic, as with any medical field, chiropractic can carry some risks of adverse effects in very rare cases. According to systematic research recorded in the scientific literature, we know that serious injury after an appointment with a chiropractor is extremely rare. Statistics show that, for example, a car accident injury is 10 times more likely than a visit to a chiropractor.

What are the risks?

Still, some people worry that going to a chiropractor could cause a stroke. A study looked at nearly 3,000 patients from Canada and the United States who had suffered a stroke involving the arteries in their neck. Researchers looked at why these people had visited a chiropractor shortly before they had a stroke. They found that most of them had neck pain or headaches, which are some of the early symptoms of the blood vessel damage that causes a stroke. So they were probably already having a stroke before they saw a chiropractor.

From the above and other results of practice, it follows that chiropractic care itself is associated with a very low risk of health damage. The risk is so rare that the number of per thousand of its occurrence cannot be accurately estimated. As with other medical interventions, some undesirable manifestations and immediate indispositions may occur during chiropractic care, but they are usually mild and will soon disappear on their own. These may include fatigue and headaches. Despite this, clients are mostly satisfied with the work of chiropractors and believe that chiropractic is a safe way to improve or preventively maintain an overall satisfactory state of health in the long term.
